10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari And Beach Holiday 2026-2027

A 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday in 2026-2027 typically combines a safari in the vast wilderness of Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park with relaxation on the tropical island of Zanzibar or the more secluded Mafia Island. This itinerary offers a chance to witness diverse wildlife, explore unique landscapes, and enjoy pristine coastlines, creating a balanced African adventure.

Planning Your 10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari and Beach Holiday in 2026-2027

The allure of Southern Tanzania lies in its raw, untamed beauty and fewer crowds compared to its northern counterparts. A 10-day journey is an excellent introduction, allowing you to experience the best of both worlds: the thrilling wildlife encounters of its renowned national parks and the tranquil escape of its Indian Ocean coast. Whether you’re planning for 2026 or 2027, this combination offers an unforgettable adventure. Top Guide Adventures specializes in crafting these tailor-made experiences, ensuring every aspect of your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday is meticulously planned.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through the possibilities, essential planning tips, and what to expect from such a trip. We’ll cover the key destinations, potential itineraries, wildlife highlights, beach options, and practical advice for making your 2026-2027 travel plans a reality.

Why Choose Southern Tanzania for Your 10-Day Safari and Beach Adventure?

Southern Tanzania presents a distinct safari experience. Its parks are vast, offering a sense of true wilderness. Unlike the more popular northern circuit parks, Southern Tanzania’s reserves feel more remote and less commercialized, providing a more intimate encounter with nature. The combination with a beach element is particularly appealing for those seeking both adventure and relaxation within a limited timeframe.

The Untamed Wilderness: Selous Game Reserve

Formerly the largest game reserve in Africa, the Selous (now Nyerere National Park) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s famed for its immense size and diverse ecosystems, from miombo woodlands to vast plains and the life-giving Rufiji River. A 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday often features Selous for its unique activities, including boat safaris on the Rufiji River, which offer a different perspective on wildlife, especially hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife.

Selous is a stronghold for wild dogs, elephants, lions, buffaloes, and giraffes. Its open plains are ideal for spotting cheetahs, while the riverbanks teem with hippos and crocodiles. The sheer scale of Selous means that even with other visitors, you can often find yourself with vast stretches of wilderness all to yourself.

The King of Beasts’ Domain: Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park and is rapidly gaining recognition as one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. It’s known for its dramatic landscapes, rocky escarpments, and the Great Ruaha River, which becomes a vital water source for wildlife during the dry season, concentrating animals like elephants, lions, and various antelope species.

Ruaha boasts one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Tanzania and an impressive number of predators, including the largest lion populations of any Tanzanian national park. Its resident leopard and cheetah populations are also significant. The park’s rugged terrain and wilder feel make it a must-visit for serious safari enthusiasts. For a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday, including both Selous and Ruaha provides an unparalleled safari experience.

The Tropical Escape: Zanzibar or Mafia Island

After the excitement of a safari, the pristine beaches of the Tanzanian coast offer the perfect respite. You have two primary choices:

  • Zanzibar: Known as the “Spice Island,” Zanzibar offers a blend of history, culture, and stunning beaches. From the bustling Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the white sands of Nungwi and Kendwa in the north, or the tranquil shores of Paje and Jambiani in the southeast, Zanzibar provides diverse beach experiences. It’s also a hub for water sports like snorkeling, diving, and kite surfing.
  • Mafia Island: For a more secluded and authentic island experience, Mafia Island is the ideal choice. It’s a marine park renowned for its incredible diving and snorkeling, particularly the chance to swim with whale sharks (seasonally). Mafia offers a laid-back atmosphere, pristine coral reefs, and untouched beaches, making it perfect for those seeking tranquility and exceptional marine life.

Choosing between Zanzibar and Mafia depends on your preferences: Zanzibar offers more amenities, cultural experiences, and a wider range of activities, while Mafia provides a quieter, more nature-focused escape. Both are fantastic complements to a Southern Tanzania safari for a 10-day trip in 2026 or 2027.

Sample 10-Day Southern Tanzania Safari and Beach Itinerary (2026-2027)

This is a suggested itinerary, and Top Guide Adventures excels at customizing each journey to your specific interests and pace. This plan balances game drives, boat safaris, and beach relaxation.

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam & Transfer to Selous

Arrive at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. You’ll be met by your Top Guide Adventures representative and transferred to the domestic airport for your flight to the Selous Game Reserve. Upon arrival at the airstrip in Selous, you’ll be picked up by your lodge’s 4×4 vehicle and taken to your accommodation. After settling in, you’ll have an afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River, offering a unique perspective on hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. Overnight in Selous Game Reserve.

Day 2: Full Day Game Drives in Selous

Spend the entire day exploring the vast expanse of Selous (Nyerere National Park). Your expert guide will lead you on game drives through varied landscapes, searching for elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffaloes, and giraffes. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush. In the late afternoon, you might opt for a guided walking safari (subject to park regulations and lodge offerings), offering a more intimate connection with the environment. Overnight in Selous Game Reserve.

Day 3: Selous Exploration & Transfer to Ruaha

Enjoy a final morning game drive or an optional activity in Selous. After breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Ruaha National Park. The flight offers spectacular aerial views of the Tanzanian landscape. Upon landing at the airstrip in Ruaha, you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your lodge, with a game drive en route. Settle in and prepare for an afternoon of exploration in Ruaha’s rugged wilderness. Overnight in Ruaha National Park.

Day 4: Full Day Game Drives in Ruaha

start a full day of game drives in Ruaha National Park. This park is known for its dramatic scenery and impressive wildlife concentrations, especially during the dry season. Focus on tracking lions, elephants, and the park’s diverse antelope species. Your guide will share insights into the park’s ecology and the behavior of its inhabitants. Enjoy lunch at a scenic spot. Overnight in Ruaha National Park.

Day 5: Ruaha Wildlife Encounters

Continue your exploration of Ruaha. You might focus on different areas of the park today, perhaps exploring the riverine areas or the more open plains. Ruaha is particularly rewarding for predator sightings. Optional activities like walking safaris can also be arranged, offering a different perspective on the bush. Overnight in Ruaha National Park.

Day 6: Fly to Zanzibar/Mafia Island

After a final morning game drive in Ruaha and breakfast, you’ll be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Zanzibar or Mafia Island (depending on your chosen beach destination). Upon arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to your beach resort. The rest of the day is yours to relax on the beach, swim in the ocean, or simply unwind after your safari adventures. Overnight on Zanzibar or Mafia Island.

Day 7-9: Beach Relaxation and Activities

These days are dedicated to enjoying your chosen island paradise. Activities can include:

  • Zanzibar: Snorkeling trips to Mnemba Atoll, exploring Stone Town’s historic alleys and spice markets, visiting Jozani Forest to see red colobus monkeys, kite surfing in Paje, or simply relaxing on the white sandy beaches.
  • Mafia Island: Diving or snorkeling in the protected marine park, swimming with whale sharks (seasonal, typically October-March), exploring mangrove forests, or relaxing on secluded beaches.

Your Top Guide Adventures itinerary can be customized to include specific activities you’re interested in. Overnight on Zanzibar or Mafia Island.

Day 10: Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and perhaps a final swim. Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred to the Zanzibar or Mafia Island airport for your flight back to Dar es Salaam, where you can connect with your international departure flight. Alternatively, you can extend your stay or fly directly from Zanzibar to other international hubs.

Key Considerations for Your 2026-2027 Southern Tanzania Trip

Planning a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday requires attention to detail. Here are some crucial factors to consider, especially when looking ahead to 2026 and 2027 travel:

Best Time to Travel (2026-2027)

The best time for a Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday generally aligns with the dry seasons, which offer optimal wildlife viewing and pleasant beach weather.

  • Safari Season: The dry season from June to October is ideal for game viewing in Selous and Ruaha. Animals congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot. The vegetation is also less dense. The shoulder months of May and November can also be good, with fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, though there might be some rain. The period from December to March is the wet season, which brings lush landscapes and newborn animals but can make game viewing more challenging due to scattered showers and denser vegetation.
  • Beach Season: For the beaches, the dry season (June to October) also offers the most pleasant weather, with less humidity and rain. The period from December to February is also generally good, though it can be hotter. The rainy seasons (roughly March-May and November) can bring more humidity and occasional heavy downpours, but often these are short-lived, and you can still enjoy the islands. For whale shark encounters in Mafia, the peak season is typically October to March.

For a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday in 2026 or 2027, aiming for June to October or the period between December and February will likely give you the best balance of safari and beach conditions.

Internal Flights and Logistics

The Southern Circuit is more remote, and internal flights are essential for efficiently connecting the parks and islands within a 10-day timeframe. Typically, you’ll fly:

  • Dar es Salaam to Selous (Mtemere or Kingo airstrip)
  • Selous to Ruaha (Msembe airstrip)
  • Ruaha to Zanzibar or Mafia Island
  • Zanzibar or Mafia Island back to Dar es Salaam

These flights are usually operated by small bush planes and offer incredible views. Booking these well in advance is crucial, especially for peak seasons in 2026 and 2027, as seats are limited. Top Guide Adventures handles all internal flight bookings as part of your package.

Accommodation Styles

Southern Tanzania offers a range of accommodation, from rustic tented camps to luxurious lodges. Your choice will significantly impact the overall experience and cost of your 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday.

  • Selous: Lodges often feature beautiful locations along the Rufiji River or its tributaries. Options range from comfortable tented camps with en-suite facilities to more opulent lodges with private plunge pools.
  • Ruaha: Accommodation here tends to be more remote and blends into the rugged landscape. Expect comfortable lodges and tented camps that offer excellent game viewing opportunities and a sense of wildness.
  • Zanzibar: From boutique hotels in Stone Town to all-inclusive resorts and private villas on the coast, Zanzibar offers a wide spectrum of lodging.
  • Mafia Island: Lodges are typically more eco-focused, often with a strong emphasis on marine conservation and offering a tranquil, intimate setting.

When planning for 2026 or 2027, consider booking your preferred accommodation early, as popular lodges in these areas can fill up quickly.

Packing Essentials

Packing for a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday requires versatility. You’ll need clothing suitable for game drives and beach relaxation.

  • Safari Clothing: Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, green, brown) is recommended to blend in with the environment. Pack light, breathable fabrics. Include long-sleeved shirts and trousers for sun protection and to ward off insects, especially during dawn and dusk. A light fleece or jacket is useful for cooler mornings and evenings.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots for walking safaris, and sandals or flip-flops for relaxing at the lodge and on the beach.
  • Beachwear: Swimsuits, cover-ups, sun hats, and sunglasses are essential.
  • Health & Protection: High SPF sunscreen, insect repellent (with DEET), a basic first-aid kit, and any personal medications. Consult your doctor about malaria precautions and necessary vaccinations well in advance of your 2026-2027 trip.
  • Optics & Electronics: Binoculars are a must for wildlife viewing. Bring a good camera with extra batteries and memory cards. Power adapters and portable power banks are also recommended.

Budget and Cost Considerations for 2026-2027

The cost of a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday can vary significantly based on accommodation choices, time of year, and included activities. Generally, Southern Tanzania can be more expensive than the Northern Circuit due to the reliance on internal flights.

Key cost components include:

  • Internal Flights: These are a significant portion of the budget. Expect costs ranging from $300 – $500+ per person per leg, depending on the route and airline.
  • Accommodation: Lodge and camp prices vary from $250 per person per night for mid-range options to $800+ per person per night for luxury properties, often on a full-board or all-inclusive basis.
  • Park Fees: National Park and Game Reserve entrance fees are typically charged per person per day. Ruaha National Park fees are around $30 per person per day, and Selous (Nyerere National Park) fees are around $20 per person per day. Marine Park fees apply in Mafia.
  • Activities: Game drives are usually included in lodge rates. Boat safaris in Selous and specialized activities like diving or whale shark excursions in Mafia will incur additional costs.
  • Transfers and Guiding: Costs for private 4×4 vehicles, expert guides, and airport transfers.

A rough estimate for a 10-day Southern Tanzania safari and beach holiday in 2026-2027, staying in mid-range to upper-mid-range lodges and including internal flights, could range from $4,500 to $7,000+ per person. Luxury options can easily exceed this.

When budgeting for 2026 or 2027, it’s wise to factor in:

  • Booking Window: For peak season travel in 2026-2027, booking 9-12 months in advance is highly recommended to secure preferred lodges and flights.
  • Flexibility: Traveling during shoulder seasons (e.g., May, November) can sometimes offer cost savings.
  • Inclusions: Clearly understand what is included in your package (meals, drinks, activities, park fees, flights).
